The Concept

IDEKO had the privilege to support Times Square Arts and artist-in-residence Christine Wong Yap by providing scenic fabrication and installation services for “How I Keep Looking Up,” a public artwork project that opened on Flag Day, June 14th, 2021. Situated in the plaza on Broadway between 45th and 46th Streets, the display will be on view through August 9th.

Ms. Wong Yap worked with 11 seniors from Encore Community Services to create flag designs that represent sources of their resilience. Stitchers were hired through Theatrical Wardrobe Union Local 764 IATSE to sew 11 flags, which are displayed on custom flagpoles. The flagpoles have 11 unique painted trapezoidal bases that were custom-built by IDEKO. In addition to the flagpole bases, IDEKO was responsible for providing the flag poles, pole header balls, all required flagpole hardware, and the ballast blocks required to keep the installation safely secured in an outdoor environment.

Our Role

IDEKO provided the supporting fabrication for the installation.
